PEB line 11 - the data

John Bjarne Grover

The data I bring here are based on the assumption that the essence of PEB line 11 is in the fundamental theorem of linguistics - that means that the function 11 (at least the one I study here) will be in terms of a list of those words which occur twice and only twice on a line 11 in the book of 366 poems.

I have used a mechanical procedure of word editing - removing all interpunctuation and other superfluous signs - leaving only the words and counting surface form, ignoring derivations. This means that 'light' and 'lights' will be two different words - and indeed that is an interesting fact (see below). Interestingly, I first made a listing wherein I closed the gap resulting when the apostrophe in genitives and 3rd person singular appended the 's' to the word stem - but when I did the same without closing this gap, the result was exactly the same.

There are 94 or 95 such words that occur twice and only twice on line 11. The 95th is from PEB poem #108 - the date "18.8.08" which, when interpunctuation is removed, leaves either "18 8 08" or "18 8 8". If the latter is allowed, then there are two 8-digits - both on line 11 in poem 108 (!) - and that gives 95 occurrences, otherwise there are only 94. I decided to include this 8-digit (cp the octogons!) as entry #95.

There are two ways of sorting the data - I bring both lists here:

1) The alphabetic ordering of the words - then there will to each word be the number it has in the alphabetized list plus the two numbers of the poems of PEB wherein it occurs on a line 11, and

2) the ordering by ascending order of the poem of PEB wherein the word occurs - that will be two lists - one for the first occurrence and one for the second.

Here are the two lists - words occurring twice and only twice in line 11's of the 366 poems of PEB:

1) By the alphabetic ordering of these words:

I point to some interesting details: The mid entry will be #48 - in the first list that divides 'light' from 'lights' (by the half if only 94 entries are included, without #95), in the second list one finds '8' on this mid point - that is the last entry in the first list and it is #9 in the second of the second list. Notice that entries 1 and 4 are the same in the two occurrences of the second list - and that this lends to the first 8 entries in the second of the second list an interesting observation - followed by the digit '8' as #9.
